LISTENING to Nicola Horlick and a Conservative MP and GP on the Daily Politics programme no punches were pulled in explaining the problems of the NHS.

They were categorical in their condemnation of the managers and staff of the Mid Staffordshire hospital and that heads should roll. It is about time too. No excuses are acceptable, there is a culture of Omerta in the NHS with nobody being willing to criticise other members of staff. In discussing the reorganisation of the NHS it became clear that there was a concensus of opinion that acute hospitals were too small to be efficient and should serve a population of 500,000 each. People visiting will not be too pleased at the distance to travel, but do they want their loved ones to receive the best treatment?

If hospitals are not efficient, then corners will be cut and there will be more Mid Staffs. Larger centres of excellence are required end as a matter of urgency. Closing some hospitals is essential to free up the money to fund the process.
