IN his letter, February 11, Mr Hanley makes a plea for the return of nationalisation. I can only assume he is not old enough to remember the 1950's and 1960's when nationalised industries were a byword for expensive, inefficient bureaucracies who didn't know the meaning of the word service. If you wanted a new telephone you could have any colour you like as long as it was black, it would take three weeks to arrive and two men to install it. In 1945 Germany and its industry was almost totally destroyed but 10 years later it became the economic power house of Europe and has remained so ever since. In the meantime Britain languished in the doldrums with the twin burdens of nationalisation and continual strikes, both the result of rampant left wing ideology. Small wonder that new labour did not reintroduce nationalisation or reverse the Thatcher legislation to control strikes Private companies may have their problems but unless they provide a good service at a good price they go bust. When nationalised industries run out of money they just take more from the Tax payer Stephen Crow Oaklands Bolton
