Let’s debate community housing

Many people are finding it really hard to save enough money to get on the housing ladder, or are struggling with increasing rents while our salaries are staying the same.

There are also some of us who cannot find housing accommodation for people with disabilities, especially those who are wheelchair living.

Very often those with disabilities have to make do with social housing stock that is altered and some times not altered adequately to the person’s needs.

The social housing that is offered doesn't even permit a wheelchair living person to even view the property because the doors are not wide enough for the wheelchair living person to view the property.

Making do to social housing properties, when many of these properties were built some 40, 30 years old and were built well before disabled people were living in the community, is not good enough.

We need to be able to accommodate everyone within the community and not just be thinking that we can make do with social housing that was built in era well before people with disabilities were living within the community.

I am part of the Yes to Homes campaign which is helping to create a lifeline for the people who are renting, trying to get on the housing ladder, and stuck at home with only dreams of moving out which for some people who are wheelchair living, is near on impossible.

We all need to be prepared to join in the local debate with our local councillors to tackle this problem, and think about how we can get the right homes in the right places at prices that are affordable for everyone, including those who are wheelchair living in Bolton.

But our community leaders can only deliver those homes if more local people speak up and tell them things must change.

The community must join the Yes to Homes campaign, together we can make them listen.
