WITH reference to Peter Johnston's letter, April 25, "Congestion charging does make sense". His remarks seem rather strange.

He insults motorists by claiming in his letter that motorists, roads, beer and breweries are similar entities, and that, just as tax taken from beer drinkers does not go to fund breweries, tax taken from motorists is not going to fund the maintenance and building of roads either.

I can only conclude, therefore, that the billions of pounds taken from motorists every year are instead being used to prop up bureaucracy and inefficiencies within Government.

It would seem to me that Mr Johnston has either never driven, or has not driven in and around central London recently. Whilst Ken Livingstone claims that congestion charging works, motorists who regularly drive in and around this area, residents who live in and people who have businesses located in the congestion zone will tell your correspondent that congestion charging does not work.

Perhaps by desperately trying to justify congestion charges to your readers, this "patronising socialist" is fearful that the public of this country (not just motorists) are now beginning to awaken to the fact that Government, both central and local, is, "by way of one stealth tax or another tax", taking far too much money off them, and have been doing so for many years.

The day is fast approaching, Mr Johnston, when the public will say enough is enough and refuse to pay these taxes en-mass.
