IN response to the suggestion that the subway linking The Haulgh area with the town centre should be filled in (Letters, Saturday, April 28). Why not improve it, so that it's fit for pedestrians to use? There is certainly room for improvement.

The subway is badly lit. It appears rarely, if ever, to be swept and kept clear of litter and mud. The footpath approach at both the Churchgate and Bury Road are on a bend, so that once in the underpass, the way out is not clear. And, yes, once inside, it can feel threatening. But it is the main walking route into the town centre for a lot of people.

By contrast, the pedestrian walkway under St Peter's Way linking St George's Street and the Turton Street housing area is clean, light, wider and decorated with ceramic depictions of Hall i'th' Wood and Samuel Crompton's mule. So, making a pedestrian subway a pleasant place to walk through can be done.

Perhaps when the local elections are over, local councillors could turn their minds, and imaginations, to making access to the town centre from the Castle Street area feel safer and more pleasant for pedestrians.

Why not some creative thinking, rather than close it down and fill it in?
