ON Sunday. I went to the Macron more in hope than expectation, as I'm sure did thousands of other Wanderers fans.

The sorry performance in our penultimate match at Burton Albion gave little cause for optimism, and I was prepared for the worst, but hoping for a miracle.

The team performed well throughout the match, but a series of missed chances suggested it was not going to be our day.

Hopes were restored when Adam le Fondre entered the fray, and, with just over a quarter of the match to go, scored a typical opportunist goal.

Could this be the miracle I'd hoped for? Within minutes came the answer. Forest equalised and hopes were once again dashed.

Worse was to follow when Forest scored a second, which would seem to have sealed our fate.

Many fans around me at that point left the stadium.

What followed was one of the most incredible passages of football I have ever witnessed.

Two goals in three minutes by David Wheater and the much maligned Aaron Wilbraham won the day and saved us from the drop against all the odds.

I was especially pleased for Wilbraham, who had played a great game and certainly didn't deserve to be on the losing side.

To those who left the stadium immediately after we conceded the second goal, I would ask this: how would the team have fared if the players were so quick to throw in the towel?

When the going gets tough, the tough get going, as the saying goes.

Well done to the whites.

You did us proud!
