THE Labour council is to be congratulated on finally providing an excellent display of Christmas lights in Victoria Square, even though it has taken them over 20 years to do so.
What a pity, however, that during that period they have allowed the town centre to fall into terminal decline so that there are virtually no quality shops left to entice those people with money to spend away from Middlebrook and The Trafford Centre to see the lights and shop in the town.
The news that there is to be a coffee bar, phone shop and sports shop in the former Co-op/Lewis's building in Victoria Square is another nail in the coffin. The last thing that the town centre needs is more of these types of businesses.
