IT'S funny how doing something nice for others brings out the best in everyone.

Young Jessica Waring used her 13th birthday not to get the latest mobile phone or designer label outfit but to raise money for local cancer charity Chemo Mums.

She asked for donations rather than presents and is on track to raise hundreds of pounds as a result.

Jessica, from Deane, had a great party at Regent Park Golf Club, and staff at Bolton salon Horners were so impressed with her caring gesture that they gave her a makeover so she could enjoy her birthday even more.

She is obviously a special girl and a credit to her parents, andher example not only brightened the lives of other people but made them want to do something, too.

It's a phenomenon you can see regularly at other local charities like Vision Aid or Bolton Hospice. The latter has hundreds of volunteers who inspire each other; just go into one of the charity's shops and see the teams of ladies in action.

There's tremendous satisfaction in doing something for someone else - although you probably didn't need me to make that point. You may already be someone who spends time helping at their church or with local elderly people.

You might be someone like the brilliant volunteers in Bolton who help Contact the Elderly, taking lonely and isolated pensioners out for a ride and offer tea and company at a hostess's home each month.

What you might not realise as you do your bit is that you are not only helping individuals at that moment but inspiring others to do the same. This kind of practical charity rubs off.

So, if you're looking for a New Year resolution that will actually make a difference, how about one to help less fortunate people this year?

Bolton is bursting with charitable groups and organisations that help the community. And you'll be amazed just how good it feels!
