I'M a cyclist and have been for 25 years but I'm also a car driver, as most cyclists are. The one thing guaranteed to create bad feeling between cyclists and motorists is the selfish and arrogant attitude of cyclists riding two abreast and creating a mobile chicane.

Several times each week, I see groups of 15-plus riders in the Bolton and Chorley areas, two and sometimes three abreast, with a collection of cars following at 15mph, struggling to get past.

The selfishness of this riding is incredible, but more so is their apparent lack of "sense of vulnerability" in today's traffic. It only needs one irritated driver to blast past too close and a tragedy is not for away.

If a motorist drove around at this speed, making it difficult for others to overtake, then they would surely commit the offence of "driving without reasonable consideration for other road users". Two cyclists on their own are bad enough, but in groups it is just plain selfish. I cannot think of any justifiable reason for this attitude and I doubt they could offer one.

A cycle is a single track vehicle and should be used as such. Comments like "it's traditional to ride in twos so we can chat" might have been reasonable in the 1950s, but if cycling wants a modern image with as much support from the public as possible, then the attitude of a lot of club cyclists has got to change.
