IN response to James Birch’s letter, “Guidelines for magistrates” (April 18), I have to say that I do fully understand and appreciate the conditions that govern their court decisions.
Needless to say that for the justice department to order that magistrates must not send criminals to prison because the prisons are full can only be seen as compromising our legal system to the level of a barrack room court.
Magistrates are required to uphold the law and to administer justice, without hindrance from politicians.
I would never dream of becoming a magistrate under our existing legal system.
Yes, I will write to Jack Straw, as suggested by Mr Birch, but only to remind him that Parliament makes the laws of England, and therefore it is the duty of our police and courts to enforce those laws, without interference from Jack Straw.
