Firstly, I must congratulate Bob Splaine on being a very pro-active councillor.

Secondly, he has done a wonderful job in talking with the managers of First Bus regarding the 582 Leigh to Bolton services (Letters, April 25).

Thirdly, didn’t the articulated buses actually start life on Bury, on Route 135, and not in Leeds?

Now, I had to laugh at the title of that letter — “Bus company true to its word”.

Two years ago, the firm promised to market route 95 to help the ever-increasing passenger numbers, to make sure that it is never in danger of being withdrawn.

I’m sure they promised new buses on the route and promised a review of reverting back to the old 94 and 536/537 routes, due to the loss of connections with amenities for the elderly in the area.

What’s happened? Nothing, it seems. Since then, they have let down the route and, most importantly, the passengers. There are late running buses –so late that two buses can arrive at the same time, even though there is supposed to be a 30 minute frequency. Some are early, some do not run at all and some miss parts of the route.

The route was made impossible for passengers to use and passenger number have fallen. They withdrew the route as a commercial concern in April and the GMPTE had to step in to keep it going for three months (A review is due in July and we could actually end up with no bus at all.

I have not seen any pro-active intervention from other councillors or from the councillor who is also the Bolton spokesperson for GMPTE. Passengers have been let down by respective GMPTE councillors, who, it seems, have done nothing.
