I HAVE read and watched developments concerning the demolition of the loco works.
Not one of our councillors has put up a decent argument for keeping the works, but surely the reason for that is simple — there is no case to be made. Why? Who in Horwich has access to the loco sheds? No one.
It is part of a privately owned industrial estate.
Horwich has changed so much in the last 10 years that most people probably don’t even know the loco works exists down there, or even existed in the first place. That is not a slur on Horwich’s newest residents, it is simply life moving on at a fast pace.
Open up vehicle access to the bottom of Middlebrook, make sure the new school which has been mentioned goes ahead, ensure that what was once the hub of our town is not forgotten but remembered sympathetically.
Possibly the land behind the war memorial could be turned into a new heritage centre, which I know would mean the current centre having to relocate, but again it’s called progress.
Cllr Rock’s comments that the town would not be the same without the works and it will not be part of Horwich any more is, I think, pathetic. He is almost on a one-man mission to fend off any involvement with Bolton. Wake up man, we lost that battle 20-odd years ago when we gave up the HUDC.
I have said this before, I love Horwich as much as the next person, but we have to grab this opportunity with both hands.
