I HAVE just received a letter from Bolton Council, containing “important news”, regarding changes to the green waste collection.

Bolton Council’s environmental services department has spent years telling home owners not to put food waste in their green bin.

However, now it seems it is apparently 50 per cent more expensive to collect and dispose of food waste in the grey bin than it is to recycle it and homeowners are expected to put all food waste in a lined caddy, which will be provided along with 52 bags, one for each week of the year.

Firstly, I have no space in my kitchen for a lined caddy. Secondly, the caddy is going to get full very quickly as I have a family of four, so I am going to be constantly ordering new bags.

Thirdly, what happens in summer when garden waste will also be put in the green bin and branches, twigs, etc, pierce the disposable bags?

I think this scheme is ridiculous and I, for one, will not be taking part.
