CONGRATULATIONS to Horwich couple Cat Taylor Powell and husband Mark.

They’ve just got married, but rather than using wedding gift cash on themselves they’ve pledged to change the life of a young girl living in poverty in the Philippines.

They are sponsoring 15- year-old Maridel who, after the death of her father, moved in with her sister’s family in Manila. Their home is on the top of tombs in a cemetery, surrounded by bones.

The families there are helped by a small charity called The Durian Project, which the Powells learned about through their Bolton church, The Bridge.

They were so touched by her plight they decided to travel to the Philippines to visit her and their photographs form the focus of an exhibition next month which will highlight why the charity needs support.

The Powells have started married life in the best possible way.
