I’VE been following the Cities Fit for Cycling campaign, launched by The Times recently. Prompted by an increase in cycling fatalities and the serious injury sustained by one of their reporters whilst riding to work (she’s still in a coma), it was scheduled for debate at Westminster Hall last week. MPs were to discuss issues such as allowing cyclists to go through red lights, as the law allows in Paris.

Recently a bus driver has been jailed for 17 months for running a cyclist off the road. A head-cam captured the evidence. Also, a gem of a comment from one of The Times’ columnists: “Show me a motorist who is against dedicated cycling lanes and I’ll show you somebody so consumed by hate their brain has stopped working.”

If Bolton wants city status, it needs to look after cyclists, especially if they want to attract tourism on the strength of The Iron Man, which attracts thousands of cyclists.

To join the 22,000 already signed up, which includes Mark Cavendish, Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Alan Sugar, “Freddie” Flintoff and James Cracknell, pledge support for the “Cities” campaign and read some cracking comments on-line.
