I AM amazed that Cllr Cliff Morris says “he doesn’t know the difference between an elected Mayor and leader of the council” (The Bolton News, February 16). Well, I am happy to enlighten him. An elected mayor is voted for by the whole electorate, a council leader is voted in by the voters in his or her ward.

Since councillors only recieve less than 3,000 votes (some considerably less) at an election, the council leader is elected by these few voters.

This is true whoever takes on the role of leader of the council. Not democracy in my book.

I believe, contrary to Cllr Morris, that an elected mayor would benefit the town. So let democracy take its course and hold a referendum.
