WE see again the world envisioned by Alan Ramsay.

A world where there are no motor cars, lorries or buses.

A world where everybody gets around on bicycles.

I can see it now, the Warburton’s bakery man riding along on his bike with a basket in front and a cycle trailer behind him.

I am sure he will get the shelves of the supermarket on his round filled by closing time.

Hark! What’s that sound? It’s the bell being used on the ambulance tandem, with a stretcher trailer behind it.

There goes Fireman Sam with his bucket of water to start putting out the fire at his local cycle shop.

“Look everybody, there’s that four-wheeled cycle from Butlins that the council has adapted with a snow plough on the front and a spare seat facing backwards so that a third council worker can chuck shovels full of grit behind it as it clears the towns roads.” More warning bells. Yes, we see two burglars making off with bags of swag on their mountain bikes and, close behind them, we see and hear the police on their high-performance tandem, in hot pursuit.

Oh, what a wonderful world Mr Ramsay would have us live in.

No traffic pollution, no children knocked over by cars, no food on the shelves of the shops, no snow and ice cleared from our roads and footpaths, etc Desmond Magurk Bolton
