THESE days more and more people are adept at baking thanks to TV programmes like The Great British Bake-Off.

And this Christmas will see many women – and men – taking to the kitchen to create wonderful food from scratch, having seen marvellous dishes whipped up by talented amateurs and professionals alike.

More people now idolise chefs and hundreds are flocking to the Bolton town centre tipis to sample tasty food made by the famous names supporting the central Winter festivities this year.

In spite of the rise of all the new names (and the enduring appeal of oldies like Mary Berry), it seems that when we want expert festive food advice we still turn to that tried and trusted favourite, Delia Smith.

The 74 year-old cook has claimed three of the spots in Amazon’s festive top ten list of cookbooks ahead of all the rest. For me, this shows that, while we drool over the latest Christmas creations by newer names, we only want tried and trusted recipes when we celebrate.
