The gym can be an intimidating place, especially if you've never been before.

There's so many machines, everybody looks so fit, what am I supposed to do with all those weights, ball and strange looking contraptions?!

There are so many things to put you off taking the first step, and I can assure you, you are not on your own in your uneasiness — everyone feels a little uncertain when entering uncharted territory.

That said, here's some advice to help you take that first step.

When choosing a gym, have a look around a few, speak to the trainers as these may be the people you rely on for their advice and expertise for the next few months or more.

You will get a feeling for which gym you feel most comfortable in. It's a good idea to visit a gym at the time you will regularly train at as the atmosphere will change at different times during the day with clientele and scheduled classes etc.

Once you've chosen your gym, think about booking a consultation with a trainer.

A fitness instructor can induct you into the gym, helping you to use equipment correctly and offering you generic advice on where to start.

A Personal Trainer can design you a personal programme and give you more specific advice on exercise and nutrition.

For regular sessions with a Personal Trainer will generally be an extra cost, they are however specialists in their field so if you are new to exercise or not, sessions with them will be beneficial to ensure you get the results you want.

So you've chosen your gym, you've booked a session with a fitness professional, what's next?

Pack a bag! Choose some comfortable clothing, you don't need to spend a fortune on new gym wear, something that's easy to move in and that will keep you cool is fine. Ladies, a supportive sports bra is essential. Trainers are necessary. Pack a bottle of water as it's important to keep well hydrated whilst you exercise, pack a sweat towel too. It's a good idea to pack a healthy snack for after your session as it's common to feel a bit 'shakey' after your first exercise session, probably because you've panicked about it for so long beforehand!!

Taking that first step may be daunting but the feeling of satisfaction and achievement you'll get after your first session will far outway the worry beforehand. So give it a go, you can do it!
