JOAN Pritchard Jones and Kevin Hayes are absolutely right to highlight the need for our government to support calls to recognise Palestine.
It is important that governments around the world work together in order to support a just peace for Palestinians and Israelis alike.
We have heard a great deal over the years about the need for a “two state solution” to ensure peace in the region.
However, the state of Palestine is currently recognised by some countries but it is not fully recognised by the United Nations or many Western governments, including the UK and USA.
This completely undermines the potential success of any peace discussions.
In a historic vote on Monday, October 13, the House of Commons agreed: “That this House believes that the Government should recognise the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel, as a contribution to securing a negotiated two state solution.”
This is an important step in the right direction. Well done to Julie Hilling MP for Bolton West and other local MPs who gave this their full support.
