With regard to the story about the Care Quality Commission report, our eldest daughter was diagnosed with "severely aggressive breast cancer" in her early twenties. We didn't know which way to turn.

Our own GP (Dr Barry Silvert of Stonehill Medical Centre, Farnworth,) agreed to see us and give us his advice, even though she herself was under a different practice. (No professional ethics involved, he was simply talking to distraught parents, not the patient.)

He opened his surgery specially on a Saturday morning to see us. Nothing in it for him, no payment from the NHS, no kudos, nothing. He advised us. Today, 19 years later, she is still with us, looking fabulous and now we have three terrific grandsons. How many doctors can you think of that would do that?

To the CQC I would say, put that in your pipe and smoke it — and that's being polite!
