I NOTE Tom Hanley's letter "Keep an eye on the council." emphasises the need to ensure any partners they might engage do not employ workers on zero hours contracts.

Clearly any agreement must ensure a clause in contracts simply include this. I as usual completely agree with Tom on this matter but I'm sure he would agree with me that zero hour contracts are not the only way that some big concerns make sure that they rip us off to their advantage, as any body who had watched two episodes of the Super Rich on BBC2 will have seen.

With this in mind I feel unions need to keep and eye on such as grievance policies, leave of absence policies etc as they and the local authority via different administrations has done. And I would add pensions.

Cllr Cliff Morris as chair of the meeting repeatedly emphasised that it was simply to discuss where the savage cuts would take place. Well with elections, both council and general parliamentary within 16 weeks, I don't believe sitting on the fence regarding policy will cut any ice nearer to the big day.

The other cuts are NHS cuts and to this end a meeting will be held at the Central Library on January 29 with all prospective candidates invited to answer questions on how they will deal with NHS finances and organisation. Let's see which of our candidates are prepared to come and stand up to their cause, democracy in action!
