IN response to Cllr Paul Richardson's letter.
He does seem to be living in cloud UKIP land! He talks about the UK having no border control with regards to fellow EU citizens. What he does forget to mention is that the UK and Eire never signed the Schengen Agreement which means that we do not have free movement into the UK, which Mr Richardson is trying to portray.
When leaving and entering the UK, even to/from another EU country, passport details have to be given. Why is this? Because police and other security checks are done on people before they leave or enter. If the UK had signed the Schengen Agreement then those checks would not be taking place and many people will not have been arrested, or even turned back, at the borders.
I travel quite often into other EU countries and I can tell you that our borders are very effective at stopping undesirable EU nationals from entering the UK and see arrests and people being turned back every time I go through passport control. Yes we have passport control – if we had signed the Schengen Agreement then there would be no passport control. So before listening and believing UKIP myths it is about time people opened their eyes and read about the Schengen Agreement and realise that we do have control of our borders and in fact our Border control is the tightest this country has ever seen whether for UK nationals, other EU nationals or non-EU nationals.
By the way what can a town councillor do about it, anyway? Nothing as he does not have any powers with regards to national security.
