WITHOUT doubt, two of the hot topics in Bolton at the moment are the proposed vandalism of Cheadle Square and the desecration of the Town Hall.

Spearheading the opposition to these is Stuart Whittle, ably supported by prominent Conservative Councillors.

I have to say that I for one stand four-square behind them and I’m sure that the Lib Dems are like minded.

A local referendum has been suggested. It is extremely unlikely that Bolton Council would fund this and in any event it could not be made binding without alteration to the Town and Country Planning Act.

A petition is another way forward but again, as in the case of the Market Place, it would undoubtedly be ignored.

As I see it, when push comes to shove, Labour Councillors will be obliged to support these proposals whatever their constituents think.

My suggestion is simple. In less than six weeks from now, the entire population of Bolton has the opportunity of making their views perfectly clear at the local elections.

So, whatever your political allegiance may be, if you want these disfigurements of the town centre, then vote Labour. If you don’t, then vote anything but Labour.

The same applies to the General Election. The current MPs are noticeable by their silence on these matters and your vote will let them know that there are consequences to this abdication of responsibility.

They will certainly listen if you kick them in the Ballot Box.
