IN reply to Ian Greenhalgh,"Who would we bomb" April 15, hopefully we would not bomb anybody.

The key point is that it is the ultimate deterrent — any aggressor that either threatens to bomb us, or threatens to invade, knows that we can make a devastating retaliatory strike, to anywhere in the world. The point about having a submarine at sea 24/7 is that there is always this capability from an unknown location.

This deterrent kept Europe safe during the Cold War. Whilst we are part of NATO we have the security of the other member states, but we cannot assume that the USA would risk involvement in a nuclear exchange for a 'local' European issue. We must protect ourselves.

It is a separate debate as regards our profile in the world, and the need for us to be involved in far flung conflicts, which is where the cost of our ships, planes, and army comes in.
