AS a regular user of Chorley Old Road, I write about the deplorable state of the bottom end of this busy highway.

On the southbound carriageway, near Park Street, the road surface has got so bad that motorists are crossing over to the other side to avoid the deep depressions which extend well over 100 metres.

As I recall, this area of road was subject to quite deep excavations, perhaps 10 years ago, for main drainage works which lasted several months. Ever since then, as the reinstatement has continued to settle, the road has been regularly "filled-in" on an ad hoc basis.

Normally a period of some 12 months gives sufficient time for reinstatements to finally compact. But if the local authority are waiting for the back-filling to stabilise on this stretch, before carrying out resurfacing, it seems that they will have to wait for ever. Perhaps there is something fundamentally wrong underneath the surface.

Following letters to the Bolton News from several readers last summer/autumn, Cllr David Chadiwick, Cabinet Member for Highways, stated that remedial works would be carried out before the end of the financial year. This deadline passed several weeks ago and still there is no sign of any action on this, (now dangerous), highway

Please can we get this road sorted out.
