WHAT a pity to see Octagon luminaries David Thacker and Elizabeth Newman entertaining the Vice Chancellor of Bolton University, George Holmes (BN April 20).
As they smiled for photos before continuing their celebrations, Bolton TUC were holding a demonstration outside the theatre in full view of the happy trio — indeed Elizabeth Newman went out to chastise demonstrators for touching the windows with their placards.
It is easy to imagine David Thacker staging a play that celebrated the actions of trade unionists protesting at the unfair dismissal of fellow workers; less easy to reconcile David showing such delight in the company of the man who sacked these workers in the face of very clear evidence of their innocence.
Bolton TUC regards this night of "celebration" a low point in OUR theatre's history, a view underlined by the presence of bouncers on the door — a first in Octagon history?
