THERE have been several comments and letters in the Bolton News and elsewhere about the relationship between the Octagon Theatre and the University of Bolton and the current dispute over the dismissal of two University employees.

For the record, I would like to say that the Octagon has no opinion on the dispute, or the conduct of the University or its employees. I have asked both the University and union leaders to respect this.

The University is a major partner of the theatre and we work together to develop talent, educate students and stage ambitious work for audiences. The Octagon also has a history of championing democracy and of working with the union movement in the region. We value all these partnerships but that means we also recognise when we need to be impartial.

People have the right to stage a demonstration outside the theatre if they wish. The Octagon values free speech. However, I do not apologise for asking protestors not to bang on the windows and intimidate our guests and staff. In such circumstances security staff were necessary to ensure the safety of everyone present.

The Octagon is an asset owned and enjoyed by the entire Bolton community. It always has been and always will be. David Thacker and Elizabeth Newman, our artistic leaders, are passionate about this. We want to involve and include everyone in theatre and the arts, but that does not mean anyone should assume our support for their cause.

If anybody wishes to discuss any of these issues they are welcome to get in touch with me. Both Elizabeth and I would be happy to have a conversation with them.
