I SEE yet another correspondent feels it is their duty to tell me where I fit in their dystopian view of society, without bothering to consult me (S Entwistle: We need a clever person, like Newton or Einstein to invent a new equation for us before we disappear onto a black hole).

I am sure that I am not in this mysterious 10% of the ‘Silent Minority’ who seem to be living these incredible lives, paid for by everyone else. I am, however, living a normal life, with a good community. I am lucky and I accept that, and I also understand that there are people much less fortunate who are genuinely struggling and need help.

However, S Entwistle’s contention that there is some 40 year-long conspiracy designed to erode society, and that the remaining 90%, the ‘masses’, are all reliant on food banks and forced on to social media is clearly ridiculous.

I note with interest that although S Entwistle suggests they are part of these ‘masses’, they seem to have positioned themselves as mentally superior to the rest of us, able to resist the lure of ‘brainless hedonism’ etc. All are equal, but some are more equal than others, I suppose.

This sort of misguided, unsubstantiated and negative rhetoric is damaging and unhelpful to society. Trying to force people into these clearly defined social groups, that exist only in your head, is divisive, and I for one don’t fit into either.

Maybe if S Entwistle got out and spoke to people on a human level, rather than stereotyping them, and fabricating conspiracy theories, they would find that there is a real life community right on their doorstep.
