I AM writing to clarify the situation following the publication of the article which appeared on January 20 regarding the new Logistics North Local Link service.

One of the aspirations of Bolton, Wigan and Salford Councils is to provide employment opportunities for residents of Rumworth, Little Hulton, Shakerley, Hag Fold, Atherton, Farnworth and Westhoughton at this site. We now have the opportunity to provide much needed employment opportunities.

Local Link is a multi-occupancy service, not a taxi based service and provides affordable transport where it is not practical to offer normal bus services.

Aldi has chosen to relocate its Regional Distribution Centre to Logistics North on the site of the previous open cast mine. Local Link will play an important and vital role in transporting people to and from the development.

The service is being paid for wholly by Bolton Council via Section 106 funding for the duration of a three-year contract.

The site is in its embryonic state and therefore it is not possible to properly and adequately assess the ongoing future potential public transport requirements. This will clearly be dependent upon how quickly more companies are attracted to the site and set up business.

Therefore it is important that nothing should detract or undermine employment opportunities and this includes unhelpful headlines associated with the article. This is most definitely not a minicab service.
