IT'S a rare day when I agree with Nick Peel but he's right on this moronic idea to tax users of St Peter's Way. Nobody is getting stuck in a traffic jam for their health and since road users have no other viable means of getting to where they are going on time, all this tax will do is make hard-working people less well off.

Moreover the £100 levy on HGVs can only have been dreamed up by someone who simply has no idea of economics. A high tax on HGVs won't be borne out by the transport company, it will be added to the unit cost of the goods they transport. HGVs can't just drive on any road they please, they are stuck with main roads like St Peter's Way, so that tax must be factored into the cost of doing business. Expect the cost of your essential items to go up because of this tax.

In Bolton we strive to close the gap between richest and poorest; we don't widen it with unnecessary taxes to assuage some latent environmental guilt. This tax is a stupid idea that will only worsen the financial problems of the least well off.
