CAMPAIGNERS calling for improvements to rail services in their area say they have had a positive response.

Friends of Walkden Station was set up 14 months ago.

Chairman Peter Aust said that since then he had regularly met representatives of both train operator Northern Rail and infrastructure owner Network Rail.

The friends group's key aims include getting a sealed-off section of the platform reopened and securing Sunday services for the station.

Trains which are longer than two carriages are currently unable to stop at Walkden because of the shortened platform. This means passengers are forced to cram on to packed rush-hour Wigan to Manchester services and often cannot get aboard.

Mr Aust said: "There are issues around the safety of the platform structure which need to be resolved before it can be reopened but we are encouraged by the response we've had from Northern Rail, which runs the station.

"It's frustrating because passengers often have to wait for a second train, only to find that packed too."

Mr Aust said the station needed Sunday services for people who work or shop in Manchester, visit Blackpool or want to get to the airport.

Worsley MP Barbara Keeley said she too was "encouraged" after raising the issues at a meeting with Northern Rail managing director Heidi Mottram this month.

Ms Keeley said: "It provided me with an opportunity to express the concerns of local people, many of whom are unhappy with the station and the rail services currently available."

What madness is this? This station was first built about 100yrs ago. (I'm guessing). The platform is there but only part of it is safe. It doesn't have to be constructed, just made safe. The private, profit making, share holder paying company will make sure they first have a health profit before they invest. The Labour MP Ms Barbara Keeley: said she was "encouraged" after a meeting with Heidi Mottram of Northern Rail.
How many examples of Labour Governments betrayal of the working man in favour of rich private companies do we need? The Labour Party membership has more than halved over the last 10yrs, I am one of the leavers, (is that a word?) Why would anyone who believes in social justice and a fair deal for working people stay with this bunch? The north/south, rich/ poor gap has soured under Labour and will continue at an increasing rate. The promise of '97' is now a massive, bitter disappointment.

Bit of a boob (though boobs can be a good thing) soured, should of course be soared.

What has the platform structure got to do with it? Surely people can walk through the first two carriages where they can get on, into additional carriages behind.

This is what happens on the midland mainline services that call at a couple of stations where the platforms are too small for all the carriages!!!

At least the trains actually stop at Walkden.

Unlike Moses Gate, Farnworth, Kearsley and Clifton - lucky enough to have at least 1 train a day!!! And the PTE want people to use Public Transport - how can they when the local stations do not have enough trains stopping at them, at times when needed!!!
