IT SEEMS that old schools in Bolton elicit as much interest as almost anything else in Looking Back, particularly those that now longer exist either altogether or in their old incarnation.

So we felt it prudent this week to feature a full page dedicated to Chalfont Street School — knowing this will prove particularly interesting to our older Looking Back readers.

While not, specifically, Chalfont Street School, this is, of course, Chalfont Street in Astley Bridge from which the old school gets its name.

Our original photograph is undated and we wonder if any of our readers will be able to put a date, rough or otherwise, to the image.

There is just one resident visible on the picture which appears to have been taken on a rainy day judging by the wet pavements and cobbled street and the fact the woman on the right of the picture is wearing a headscarf — as these were particularly popular head gear in the fifties and sixties could our picture have been taken during that period do you think?

In our latest image, taken recently, you can see there are many changes not least the fact there are now fewer houses when, once, Chalfont Street was a residential street filled with mainly semi-detached properties.

Do you have memories of Chalfont Street? Perhaps you lived there. If so do get in touch with Gayle McBain on 01204 537269 or email gayle.mcbain@nqnw.co.uk
