THINK you know everything there is to know about Astley Bridge — well now you have the opportunity to prove it.

If you can answer the questions in this tough quiz then you can really say you do.

The quiz was written by local Councillor John Walsh whose Astley Bridge knowledge is legendary — "It is not a quiz for the faint hearted," says Councillor Hilary Fairclough who explains that as Cllr Walsh has such a "detailed knowledge" of Astley Bridge and Bolton she feels sure the quiz will "need some research".

There is a fabulous prize for the winner of an engraved decanter which has some unique features, explains Cllr Fairclough.

It has been engraved by Atherton Bespoke Engravers — a new family business in Astley Bridge — and has a genuine 1948 penny set into it to represent the fact that when Astley Bridge became part of Bolton local residents paid 1d less in their rates than the rest of the town (in 1948).

It is a commissioned one off piece which has been designed and engraved by hand for the Astley Bridge Festival Weekend of July 11 and July 12 this year.

The quiz was compiled for the recent Astley Bridge Festival and is now open to Looking Back readers.

It features 16 questions which we feel are pretty tough and will need a substantial local knowledge as well as the ability to delve deep into local history — but that is what it is all about.

If you manage to answer all 16 questions then we feel it is fair to say you really do know all there is to know about the Astley Bridge area.

Just answer the questions and send your answers, along with your name, address and day time telephone number to: Astley Bridge Quiz, Ucan Centre, 92-94 Mackenzie Street, Bolton, BL1 6QP or email hilary.fairclough@bolton.gov.uk by Friday August 14.

The winner will be drawn at random from all the correct entries received and announced in Looking Back once all the entries have been checked and verified. Please note that this is not a Bolton News' competition.
