THIS old picture was taken in February 1933.

It was snapped in Victoria Square and even though it was a sunny day many of the distant buildings were blurred by the smoke that covered the town at that time.

This smoke came from the many factory chimneys.

Life must have been very different in Bolton at this time.

As you can see the area is lit by gas lamps but the war memorial is just as it is today.

At this time there would be through traffic heading along Victoria Square but as it was the 1930s far less traffic would be on the roads then compared with today of course.

The pram we can see on the left is typical of the time — as most mums would walk with their babies prams needed to be far sturdier than they are today.

Look at the gents all wearing hats — this would be a staple of dress in the thirties.

Memories of Bolton town centre are always welcome.
