TODAY’S photograph shows a group of small children playing outside a familiar Bolton building.

But do you recognise where this picture was taken?

It was, of course, outside Mere Hall in Merehall Park in Bolton.

Mere Hall was an early Victorian brick mansion built by Benjamin Dobson in the middle of Merehall Park.

In later life it became the Bolton Register Office.

It has been used for various purposes and has stood the test of time in this part of Bolton — between Chorley Old Road and Halliwell Road, close to the town centre.

We think the building was most probably used to house a play group at this time.

The picture was taken in August 1977 — perhaps you recognise yourself on the shot? Anyone with any Mere Hall memories can get in touch with Gayle McBain on 01204 537269 or email gayle.mcbain@nqnw.co.uk and share them with other Looking Back readers.

We know this building holds fond memories for many of you.
