A NIGHT of music will raise money for a charity which adapts motorcycles for disabled riders.

The event — in aid of The National Association for Bikers with a Disability (NABD) — will be at the Atherton Botanical Gardens, Tyldesley Road, Atherton, from 4pm on Saturday.

It will feature music from Thin Lizzy tribute band Black Rose, Status Quo tribute Statease Quo and Blood Brothers, who play the music of Iron Maiden, with each performing for two hours.

Organiser Dave Williams said: "NABD was set up 24 years ago by some friends who wanted to help get a disabled friend on to two wheels.

"At the time, they had no real idea how they were going to do this but, having worked out how to engineer some successful adaptations for the guy's bike, they were then approached by other people asking for similar help, and so the NABD came into being.

"The NABD now helps many bikers every year with grants towards adaptations for their machines and have invented — with the help of some very skilled engineers — a number of devices to overcome all manner of disabilities and allow people the freedom of motorcycling or triking.

"In more recent years they have had more ex-service people getting in touch with them who have been injured whilst in service and NABD have helped them get back on two or three wheels."

Later this year, another event will be held at the Atherton Botanical Gardens, with the concert room being given free of charge for the charity gigs.

It will be on Saturday, June 6, in memory of Tony Boardman, a chef at the former Glass Barrel Pub, Tyldesley Road, Atherton, who died of cancer.

Mr Boardman used to throw a birthday party for the regulars every year and, after his death, the pub's owner, John Thompson, decided to throw an annual charity birthday party in his memory.

Mr Williams said: "We have continued this tradition for the last few years, raising money for different charities every year, honouring the memory of Tony, who was a great guy, and our fallen biker brothers and sisters."

The charity night in memory of Mr Boardman will feature six covers bands who will perform for an hour each and the money raised will go to Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).

Tickets for Saturday's NABD Charity Night cost £5 on the door.
