PERFORMERS at a theatre group are far from 'brassed off' at the prospect of taking to the stage in a comedy drama.

Members of St Joseph’s Players are looking forward to appearing in Brassed Off, a play based on a true story and the 1996 film starring Pete Postlethwaite and Ewan McGregor.

It will be on at St Joseph’s Concert Hall, Chapel Street, Leigh, from Tuesday, April 21, to Saturday, April 25.

Set in 1992, the miners are on strike, the colliery is about to close and Danny’s hopes of winning the national brass band competition at the Albert Hall in London seem like a distant dream.

But the arrival of flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings romance, hope and controversy to a Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse.

The play, being directed by Doreen Johnson, celebrates the power of music and the capacity of the human spirit to inspire a community to triumph against all the odds.

Spokesman David Grime said: "The reason we picked this is we did it a few years ago and it proved to be very popular, with quite a few people asking if would ever consider doing it again.

"Plus, from an actor’s point of view, it is an extremely good play to be involved in."

It features rousing music including Jerusalem, Danny Boy, Land of Hope and Glory and Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.

Brassed Off, by St Joseph’s Players, will be on at St Joseph’s Concert Hall, Chapel Street, Leigh, from Tuesday, April 21, to Saturday, April 25, at 7.15pm.

Tickets cost £8 for adults and £4 for ages 16 and under. There will be a raffle, bar and refreshments available.
