Cimarosa Sauvignon Blanc 2014, £5.89, Lidl
Anyone who thinks Lidl is only in the bargain basement market should think again. This supermarket’s branches stock more £25-plus classic European wines than many other mass retailers. This one is not in that bracket but it is a crisp, 12.5% New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from the famed Marlborough region usually priced at least £3 higher.
Collin-Bourisset Brouilly 2013, £7.49, Lidl
Brouilly is the largest of the classic French Beaujolais Crus and produces the most robust, textured style of the wine made with the Gamay grape. It’s a light, 12.5% red with raspberry flavours and is best drunk chilled with a wide variety of foods or on its own. The price is certainly right for this good example from a maker with a 195-year history.
The Venturer Series Old Vines Garnacha, £4.79, Aldi
A real wintry treat that's easy on the wallet, this red is made from grenache grapes harvested from old vines in the high vineyards of Spain's Carinena region. It's full-bodied, laden with sensuous strawberry compote and finished off with a lick of vanilla oak. Available in store only.
