Fiddler on the Roof

St Philips Junior Workshop

St Philips Parochial Hall, Bridgeman Street

Until Saturday

DIRECTOR Mina Kirkbright keeps a steady hand on this entertaining presentation of the classic musical set in Tsarist Russia in 1905. The musical numbers are performed well by the young cast and the pathos and comedy are brought out beautifully.

Connor Guffog is excellent as the charismatic central character Tevye, his wise soliloquies, convincing accent and effortless singing voice belying his youth. This is a very convincing portrayal indeed.

He is ably supported by the wonderful Emily Abercrombie as his long-suffering wife Golde, again with an excellent accent, beautiful singing voice and very convincing acting.

Their duet of the song “Do You Love Me?” is a joy to watch and listen to.

There are many characters in this show and all support the two leads well, notably Rhianna Dickman, as the eldest daughter Tzeitel, and Jessica Barlow as Hodel.

The harmonies in the chorus numbers are extremely pleasing to listen to and each number is supported by lively and entertaining choreography from Barbara Grant.

Add a well-constructed and suitable set and this is a show that is well worth a visit. Runs until Saturday.
