PRIMARY school youngsters have been doing their bit for the community – by holding a clean-up operation.

Youngsters at the Olive Tree Primary School in Adelaide Street, Daubhill, picked up litter in their local area to help out local people.

It is part of an initiative by the children to come up with ideas to help the community. The ideas were put to staff by ‘Cool Councillors’, the spokespeople for each class in the school.

Junaid Chapti, who assisted the Cool Councillors along with a special support assistant, said: “The children were amazing. They were hard working and passionate about helping the community to make it cleaner, safer and more welcoming.

“It was great to see children from Reception all the way up to Year 6 collaborating together.

“The shopkeepers and pedestrians even applauded their hard work.”

Miss Kola, teacher in Class 2, said: “The Cool Councillors play an integral part in making the school a better, fun and safer environment for their peers.

“They are also passionate about looking after the community they live in.”

The plan is to continue the routine of getting pupils to write down their ideas and topics that they think might be of use for the community and putting the ideas to the Cool Councillors.

Vice head girl at the school Juwairiya Siddique, said: “I think everyone needs to take care of the community. I felt happy about removing litter from the streets because if we did not clean up the community it would be a mess.”

Sayhaan Gangat, in Year 3, said: “I was sad to see all the litter on the floor even when there were bins close by. I wish everyone would respect our world.

“My topic this term has been about recycling and it has taught me a lot about how to keep the community clean. I had an amazing time litter picking and would love to do it again.”

Head at Olive Tree Primary School, said: "At the Olive Tree we strive to look after our surroundings and environment by adhering to our universal values such as trust, peace, respect, compassion, equality and fairness".

“The Cool Councillors are very hard working and dedicated in their duties in making the environment a better place to live in.

“The work our children did was inspiring and we endeavour to continue with similar projects which benefit all the local community.”
