A drunk driver who killed a father and son after smashing into their car as he drove at speeds of up to 120mph on the M62 has been jailed for eight years.

Imran Hussain, aged 32, of Como Avenue, Bradford, was also given a 15-year driving ban.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of death by dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol at an earlier hearing.

Gary Proctor, 47, and his 16-year-old son James were on their way to Manchester Airport for a dream family holiday to America in the early hours of August 3 when Hussain's car collided with them.

They were rushed to hospital, but both died later that day from their injuries.

Catherine Proctor, Gary's wife and James' mum, was also in the car at the time, but survived the collision.

The police investigation that followed showed that in the hours before the collision Hussain had been acting drunk and aggressively.

This was before he even got onto the motorway.

CCTV footage from 5.10am at a petrol station on Dewsbury Road in Beeston, Leeds, shows Hussain entering the shop and staggering to the counter.

The cashier later reported Hussain's manner was angry and aggressive. When the cashier challenged him Hussain threatened to kill him, and made lewd comments about his family.

In the minutes before the collision, which happened on the M62 westbound just after Birch Services, Hussain had been seen driving at speeds of up to 120mph in his 4x4 Audi Q7.

He was swerving between the lanes, narrowly avoiding other cars.

Gary, who was driving the Proctor's Fiat Punto, was in the nearside lane when Hussain veered sharply from the outside lane and into the back of their car.

All the Proctors were trapped in the car by the force of the collision.

Hussain's car was forced off the motorway on impact, and went through the crashbarrier. He was uninjured in the collision, and witnesses who had stopped to help the Proctors had to restrain him to stop him running away.

He was arrested when officers arrived at the scene a short time later. Hussain was also charged with threats to kill, but pleaded not guilty to this charge and it was ordered to lie on file.

Catherine Proctor has made the following statement describing her loss: "Me and my family were going on a long awaited trip to New York and Florida when this happened.

"No words or sentence will ever describe the devastation that we feel.

"No one should ever go through the nightmare I have suffered over the last four months.

"James was my only child and loved life. He was a kind, thoughtful young man and loved and lived life to the full. He was just due to start an exciting chapter in his life after finishing his GCSEs. Sadly he will never experience any of that now.

"Gary was a quiet, lovely man who I have spent my whole adult life with. We had been married for 24 years.

"My whole life has been shattered. My hopes and dreams for the future have been taken away from me and the rest of my family. We will never recover from this."

Sergeant Phil Robinson, who lead the investigation into this collision, said: "This man has taken Catherine Proctor's entire family away from her in one fell swoop.

"Hussain appeared to be on a mission to act as recklessly as possible that night, clearly holding absolutely no regard for anyone else's safety.

"Not only had he got behind the wheel of his car when drunk, but he had driven so dangerously it is actually a wonder that he did not ruin anyone else's life that day."
