20 doctors among hospital staff to face redundancy

A BREAKDOWN of jobs threatened by cuts at the Royal Bolton Hospital has revealed that 20 doctors positions, 50 midwives and 93 nurses face redundancy.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust announced 500 jobs could be lost as it tries to save money.

It is more than £8 million in the red and must make £38 million savings in the next two years.

The Trust has not ruled out compulsory redundancies and said although the cuts included frontline staff, the quality of care for patients would not be affected.

Of the 500 redundancies, 149 are nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants.

Now, a breakdown by Staff Side, which represents employees at the Trust has revealed a further breakdown.

The Trust had previously said 20 medical and dental staff would be affected — the breakdown has revealed this will be 20 doctors. Other jobs at risk include 93 technical posts and therapists, 193 ward clerks and medical secretaries and 45 estates and facilities staff.

A further 1,685 employees’ positions could also be under threat. They include 1,450 nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants, who could lose their jobs and be forced to reapply for their positions on “revised terms and conditions”.

The Trust said there had been no further breakdowns and did not recognise the figures of 50 midwives and 93 nurses.

Staff Side has said the cuts will “devastate the care they provide”.

A rally, organised by unions and the Save Bolton A&E group, will take place on Saturday, December 1, between 12.30pm and 1.30pm, in Cheadle Square, Bolton.

The rally and petition are in response to the cuts at the hospital and also a Greater Manchester wide healthcare review called Healthier Together, which the unions believe could threaten Bolton’s A&E department.

The review will go to public consultation in spring 2013 but more than 14,000 people have signed a petition calling for the plans to be thrown out.

Healthier Together, Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group and Bolton NHS Foundation Trust have insisted that there are no plans to close Bolton’s A&E.

Karen Reissmann, a Unison representative said: “The cuts will have implications on care, they will make the hospital care bad and will give them the excuse to close the hospital.

I respectfully witnessed 5 nurses and 2 admin staff in pathology twiddling their thumbs, talking away for ages with only one patient in the clinic waiting for a test, highlighting an allocation of resources were the demand did not exist. Recently we saw the departing PCT C.Executive receive a £300,000 pay off, previous to that £300,000 was spent refurbishing office space for admin staff while the old Westhoughton Health Centre building remained equipped with a cold external disabled toilet, accessed like ' going to the bottom of the back yard ' ! priorities are completely lost while management look after their own.

Doctors are finding themselves with less and less to do now as most of us can diagnose ourselves on google.

The problem then, is getting our prescription,perhaps if we printed off the page and took it to Cohens they could then be authorised to dispense the drugs?.

BRH takes on patients from Bury, Salford and Leigh because of coalition cuts at other hospitals, has extra funding been made available because of this? Add this to the inordinate number of immigrants/asylum seekers dumped on our town and it makes me wonder if Bolton is being punished by the 'nasty party' for returning 3 useless Labour MP's at the last election.

BRH has taken patients from other areas for at least the last 10 years, similar to Hope Hospital, Blackburn Royal, Wigan, as others have taken patients from Bolton.

With regard your asylum seekers \ immigrants comment, my guess is you've been away from society for a number of years.

LIAR! The hospital is already understaffed and that does affect patients! Its not freaking rocket science!
What a stupid statement to make! whoever made it should be sacked. They are obviously not suitable to be in such a position if they come out with such utter crap.

What is wrong with these people. How many more story's are we going to read of long waiting times and staff shortages before they actually start to use there brains and do something about it!
You are being fined for not meeting waiting times and you have no money.

Don't talk daft Toybox. The closure of Maternity departments at Fairfield and Hope, E&E Closures at Leigh and other towns has occurred in the last few years under this wonderful coalition. As for immigrants/asylum seekers in Bolton, yes, the last government is massively responsible for it and that's why we are in the situation of public services being swamped by people who have come to this country by invitation of Blair/Brown. It's no fault of their own but they are taking an inordinate use of resources. Where's the extra money coming form. Answer: it's not.
