A RAPIST has been jailed for six years. Graham Rawsthorn had been convicted after pleading not guilty at a trial at Liverpool Crown Court.

Rawsthorn, of Beech Walk, Leigh, was also ordered to sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life. During his trial, the court heard that the rape happened at Rawsthorn’s home on January 14 last year. After having a few drinks at his house, the woman fell asleep on a settee and was covered with a duvet. She woke in the night and found Rawsthorn was raping her.

He pretended nothing had happened and she took photographs of herself as she was unsure whether she had just been dreaming. When she later awoke again she realised she had not been dreaming, left the house and rang the police.

Rawsthorn, aged 47, who has two drink driving convictions in America, denied the offence.

The court heard that Rawsthorn, who has dual American/British nationality and whose children live in the USA, still maintains his innocence.
