WESTHOUGHTION town centre has become a 20mph zone.

Members of Westhoughton Town Council approved the proposals to reduce the speed on Market Street, Westhoughton from 30mph to 20mph last year.

Residents were consulted and now the speed limit has been cut.

The change coincides with major work to the busy town centre road, which includes the replacement of speed bumps and relaying of block paving.

New speed signs have been placed at the both ends of Market Street and red asphalt has been laid to mark the change. Cllr Kevan Jones, who represents Westhoughton South, said: “This is a very significant and important development for Westhoughton town centre and the people of Westhoughton.”

Cllr David Chadwick, who represents Westhoughton South, said: “I am very pleased that we have been able to reduce the speed limit on Market Street.

“The road lends itself to reducing the limit. Pedestrian safety has been a serious concern for all of us and reducing the speed of traffic in the town centre is a must.”
