A MOTHER who caused a horrific fatal car crash when she jumped a red light after an argument with her boyfriend has been warned she faces jail.

The jury of seven women and five men at Bolton Crown Court took just two hours to unanimously convict Sheri Torkington of killing Laura Farrell by dangerous driving at the junction of St Peter’s Way and Turton Street, Bolton.

Mrs Farrell, aged 41, was driving her husband, Norman to work at a cheese distribution company in The Valley when the crash happened at about 3.20am on June 29, 2011.

She was killed and her husband, Mr Farrell, now aged 54, also suffered serious injuries, including a broken neck and a punctured lung.

Bolton Crown Court heard Torkington had argued with her partner, Philip Holt, and had driven him to his daughter’s Tonge Moor home in the early hours of the morning.

Witnesses gave evidence to say they saw the couple arguing in the street and saw the 32-year-old defendant revving her engine and doing wheel spins minutes before the crash.

Giving evidence, Torkington, of Nuffield Close, Halliwell, claimed that the traffic lights had been on amber when she went through.

She said she had not argued with Mr Holt, who she has since married, but said they had been “sniping”, “bickering” and giving each other the “silent treatment” in argument about her ex-boyfriend.

Torkington also suffered injuries in the crash.

Judge Timothy Stead adjourned sentencing for a week to allow Torkington to make arrangements with the relevant authorities regarding the care of her children, who range in age from three to 15-years-old.

He said: “The defendant is fully aware of her position and, although I bear in mind the interests and well-being of the family of the deceased, I have some interest in the defendant’s children as well.”

He added: “She has the full knowledge she will face an almost inevitable sustained period of imprisonment. If she does fail to attend she will be sentenced in her absence.”

He banned Torkington from driving and said he will decide how long next week.

Torkington was bailed, but was given a 7pm to 7am curfew and ordered not to enter Smithills unless to take or collect her children from school and not to enter any licensed premises. She will be sentenced next Friday.
