ONE of the ringleaders of a gang of yobs has admitted his part in a large-scale disturbance after a Bolton Wanderers match.

Whites fan Leon Totten was part of a group of more than 70 people who hurled missiles and abuse at police officers.

The incident happened after the home match against Blackpool on Saturday, May 4, near Scotts Bar, not far from the Reebok Stadium.

Robin Lynch, prosecuting, told Bolton Magistrates Court: “The ringleaders were throwing missiles at police.

“An officer said that it is a miracle that no-one was injured.”

The missiles were described by police as “anything they could pick up”.

Totten, aged 22, of Olaf Street, Tonge Moor, pleaded guilty to affray yesterday (TUES).

William Birtwell, defending, told the court that Totten pleaded guilty on the basis that he was shouting abuse at the officers, but he did not throw any missiles.

He said: “There is no doubt this was a large-scale disturbance in which this defendant accepts he played a leading role in, but only from an abuse point of view.

“He was shouting at the officers with this group.

“No missiles hit the officers and no damage was caused.

“He has three convictions against his name. He has been a Bolton Wanderers fan all his life and a season ticket holder for eight years prior to him joining the army.

“This is the first incident he has ever been involved in involving threats.

“All the Bolton Wanderers fans were hemmed into a corner by the police and they were united in abuse.”

Nat Ayisi-Biney, chair of the bench, said: “We have heard from your solicitor on your behalf and we have read the guidelines.

“We think this is a large-scale disturbance and this is a very serious matter. As a result we are going to commit this to the crown court for sentence.”

Totten will appear at Bolton Crown Court on July 2 to be sentenced.
