SURGEON Gordon Shepard has found himself in the frame at the hospital where he works.

The amateur photographer is showcasing his talents – in a corridor at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

The orthopaedic trauma surgeon, who is also an award-winning photographer and a member of Bolton Digital Photographic Society, has got six of his prints on display at the hospital.

His work makes up part of a larger display of work from the society, which is changed every four to six months.

The prints include a swan roosting at Moses Gate Country Park, a cyclist taking part in a race and his nine-year-old son Nathan Shepard at a theme park.

There is also a photograph of consultant anaesthetist Wyn Price’s nine-year-old son, Ben Price, playing rugby for Bolton Rugby Club.

Mr Shepard, who has worked at the hospital for 12 years, says he often uses his children in his photos, and added they have to be very patient with him. One shot in the display, which won an award at the society and was shortlisted in a regional competition, is of his 11-year-old son Luke diving into a lake in France.

Mr Shepard has captured Luke just as his fingers touch the water before there was any splash, and his body is reflected in the lake.

Another, of three wine glasses spilling red, blue and clear water, involved hours of patience from Nathan, as the pair taped wine glasses to a plank of wood, added food colouring to the water, and slid it down a ramp to try to capture the perfect shot.

Mr Shepard, aged 46, from Heaton, has been taking photos since he was a child but only started taking it seriously a few years ago.

He has been a member of the society for two-and-a-half years.

Mr Shepard said having photos on display at the hospital helped brighten the place up. He added: “I think it is nice to have photographs on display rather than just having blank walls, especially as this is a fairly dull corridor.

“This gives the patients something else to look at.”
