AN elderly woman was 'given advice' by police after she was spotted driving the wrong way along St Peter’s Way.

The woman, aged in her 90s, was stopped by traffic police near Farnworth at about 5pm on Sunday.

Police said they were alerted to the incident by members of the public who called to say they had seen a Volkswagen Polo driving the wrong way on the dual carriageway.

One motorist, who asked not to be named, said: “She was weaving around and it was quite busy at the time. There were two lanes of traffic and she was going down the middle of the road. It was quite scary.

"She had her indicators on so I think she was trying to pull over. The next junction we saw was Raikes Lane, so she might have come on there.

“She was a little old lady and she was hunched over the steering wheel struggling to see over the dashboard.

"It was certainly pretty scary. She’s lucky to be alive and it’s lucky there wasn’t a really serious accident.”

A police spokesman confirmed the woman was stopped by officers and given advice and said they are now "liaising with the DVLA" over the incident.

Hugh German, from Bolton’s Institute of Advanced Motorists, said: “I think it is very sad to hear about the woman.

"We have people who are aged in their 80s who complete the advanced driving course. Perhaps having some extra tuition might make older drivers safer.

“We are always prepared to give people a check drive and give our advice about whether further training might help them to extend their driving career.”
