BOLTON’S transport chief has written to Greater Manchester’s police and crime commissioner over the issue of speeding and crashes on roads in the borough.

David Chadwick — Bolton Council’s transport representative — has been so alarmed by the recent number of crashes on Bolton roads that he has contacted police and crime commissioner Tony Lloyd to ask what can be done to improve the situation.

The move comes after a number of high-profile incidents including a horror smash in St Helens Road which left a 12-year-old boy with “life-changing injuries” and injured 10 others.

Last week another crash in Blackburn Road left a 15-year-old boy with serious injuries.

Cllr Chadwick said: “This is my biggest concern at the moment and the more people that flag the issue of speeding up — the better.

“It is simply down to the stupidity of some people. We need enforcement to change attitudes.

“The problem is a there are a lot of young drivers getting their licenses and then driving without thinking.

“The people who can change these attitudes are the police and so I have written to Mr Lloyd to discuss the number of incidents that have occurred and to see if there could be some form of campaign.”

In a response, the commissioner said he was looking forward to reading what Cllr Chadwick had to say. Mr Lloyd added: “It’s important that the roads are safe in Greater Manchester and that drivers responsible for these incidents are dealt with correctly.

“It is also really important that the police work with local authorities on these issues.”

In 2012 Greater Manchester Police launched a campaign called Operation Dice urging people to be safer on the roads after an increase in road fatilities in the previous year.

And next week Operation Dice will be launching an awareness week in a further attempt to drive down the number of incidents on the region’s roads.
